A question our receptionists are often asked is what is included when you visit us for a musculoskeletal appointment (MSK Consultation). This is difficult to answer because, just as an eye appointment can be different every time according to the prescription, we will do different tests depending on the symptoms.
For instance, if the symptom is heel pain, we will look at the various structures around the heel and test the nerves, tendons and plantar fascia in the area and then look for any tightness in the muscles of the legs.
However, there are some tests we may do regardless of the symptoms, such as looking at the position of your feet when you stand. This is because the posture of your foot can affect everything from your toes to your spine.
Often, if the problem is deemed to be a soft tissue problem, your podiatrist will talk you through exercises needed to strengthen and/or stretch. This will often be followed up by an email reiterating the exercises given.
Sometimes the podiatrist will recommend a full biomechanical and gait assessment. This is a far more in-depth look at your issue and how it is affecting the way you walk. This is needed if we are making up bespoke insoles for you or your problem requires a more detailed assessment and rehabilitation plan.
Either way, your MSK Consultation here at Acorn Sports Podiatry will be specifically tailored to you. There is no ‘one size fits all’ when it comes to keeping our patients healthy and happy.
